Tuesday Tutorial: Jewellery Picture Frames

photo (5)

I actually first made these to display my jewellery in at a pop-up shop I was exhibiting in, but once I’d brought them home I thought they’d just be perfect for keeping my own collection all tidy! I have a beautiful big jewellery box, and a big hat box that’s crammed with jewellery too, but despite all that my things invariably end up strewn across the fireplace in the bedroom!

photo (6)

I have my flavours of the month, then they get buried underneath the next favoured few, and before too long I’ve forgotten what I have! This way though I get to show off several pieces at once, keep them all de-tangled and then just swap them back into the jewellery box when I want a change!

photo (7)

These are super easy to make, and only took me moments. They’re cheap to put together too (I made them using bits and bobs I already had at home!) and don’t take any special skills!

What you will need:

  • Picture frames (broken, or with the glass and backing removed)
  • Pencil
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Small cup hooks
  • Drawing pins
  • String
  • Mini pegs
  • A bradawl tool, if you have one, or something sharp and pointy if not! (Please be careful!!)
  • White tack or picture nails

How to make:

1. Along the top edge of your tallest frame, measure the inside edge and mark out where you’d like each hook to go using the pencil

2. Using the bradawl, start off a hole at each mark

3. Screw your hooks into the holes, ensuring they all end up facing the same way

photo (4)

4. Along each side edge of another frame, measure out and mark with a pencil where you’d like a string to cross, leaving a good 5cm in between each

5. Push a drawing pin into each mark

6. Tie string across and between each set of drawing pins

7. Attach pegs to the strings

photo (2)

8. Now they’re ready to go on the wall, either suspended on nails or just attached with white tack (like mine!)

9. Hang long necklaces from the hooks, and rings, brooches etc. from the pegs

10. Stand back and admire your work!

Wednesday Wants…. Fluoro Neon Shiny Fun

What is it about Spring that makes us go crazy for colours?! Yes, I know all the flowers are blooming in their cheery tones, but wouldn’t it make more sense to get vivid in the winter months when there aren’t so many pretty shades about?

Nevertheless, I’ll embrace the idea with gusto as usual, and what could be more colourful than a full-on palette of super bright fluorescent neons?! As such, I’ve rounded up a few ways to put a vibrant zing in your outfit….

French Sole‘s new neon collection features bright and shiny patents in solid fluorescent blue and yellow, as well as plain whites with neon piping. It’s their neon Henrietta design featuring darling little cut out hearts and contrasting trim though that really has my attention. I’m in love with all the colourways….pink with green trim, green with pink trim and orange with blue trim….and I really can’t decide which ones I’d choose! They are £120 a pair.

I adore the classic Cambridge Satchel Company‘s bags, and have for ages had my eye on their Fluoro collection. Just like all their other satchels, they are made by hand in high quality leather and you can have your initials embossed for a little extra. They start at £115 for the 11″ satchel, but you can get £15 at the checkout with the offer code ‘SPRINGFLO’.

I’ve been thinking for ages that I’d love to design my own Converse….you can create your very own personally designed pair of hi tops or low tops in various styles on their website. I only just found their neon version though, the Chuck Taylor All Star Ox Canvas Neon (£54) and the Chuck Taylor All Star Hi Canvas Neon (£60). You get to choose which colours you want where on the shoe, and you can even add your name or initials at the heel!

What do you think about these crazy shades? Too much? Or just enough?!

Wednesday Wants…… The Hello Kitty Collection from Zatchels

Hello Kitty Satchel Collection

Nearly all the left-overs and puddings are eaten….I’ve taken the cards down….and  I’m slowing packing away the decorations. It’s no good. The festivities are over. And there’s really nothing for it but to cheer myself up with some shopping.

I heard a little while ago that the wonderful satchel people at Zatchels were planning a special collection dedicated to the fabulous Hello Kitty. Of course I promptly forgot, until a picture of one came up in my feed just now, so I’m only just snooping their new offerings.

I’ve had a fondness for the Hello Kitty character for aaaages. I remember years ago getting seriously over-excited when I found a whole load of Hello Kitty products in Hamleys, and promptly bought myself some very necessary things such as a travel-sized cotton bud / Q Tip holder and a hand-bag-friendly plaster / Band Aid wallet. I got EVEN MORE excited when Liberty launched their collaboration with Hello Kitty and produced some darling stationery, gifts and toiletries, which I also snapped up a good helping of! Most exciting of all though was when I found Hello Kitty flannels in the amazing Grayson Perry exhibition I saw last year…..they really are art!

I suppose the most appealing thing for me with Hello Kitty is that you get to feel like a girly child again with fun and playful designs, but on more grown-up-friendly things. I believe many an eight year old girl still swoons over a mini Hello Kitty ruck-sack, but the brand somehow fits beautifully into that middle ground where it’s ok for kids and adults to like it. And maybe that’s why the Zatchels collection works so well. They claim it “has something for Hello Kitty lovers of all ages”, and they’re not wrong….the pretty polka dots and bold colours would suit anyone dedicated to keeping their wardrobe fun and bright, whilst the various styles and sizes available could surely find a home in any accessories collection.

Here are my favourites from the collection…..

Hello Kitty Black and White Polka Dot Saddle Bag

This Hello Kitty Saddle bag features an adorable Hello Kitty print in white and red on black leather with matching printed black attachments. It’s finished with matching black stitching and a silver nickel buckle and comes in two size….£65 for the small, £75 for the large. I’ve always loved the classic combination of red, white and black and the saddle bag is such a darling useful little carry around.

Hello Kitty Polka Dot Bows Barrel Bag

This Hello Kitty barrel bag has a super cute print of polka dot and bows, in pretty sugar-sweet colours. It’s finished with classic black attachments and a silver nickel buckle, and is a lovely little hand size. It’s £55.

Hello Kitty Town Satchel

When in Rome though…… If I had to choose just one, it would have to be this super-kitch and pink Hello Kitty Town print satchel. Look at it! Castles! Rainbows! Balloons! It has EVERYTHING!!

It’s handmade in England from the finest quality leather, using expert craftmanship, as you’d expect from all of Zatchels’ satchels, and they will happily add on a top handle for £6, a strap slider for £6 and even emboss a 20-character message inside for £20. It’s available in 11.5” at £110, 13” for £120, and the 14.5” is £130. Love!

I want to be Emma Pillsbury

It’s no secret that I have a huge girl crush on one Miss Emma Pillsbury. Since Glee first began I have fallen in love with the character entirely….. I adore all of her quirks, her stunning hair, and not least, her incredible style.

For a while, I’ve been collecting bits of Emma-worthy style as a board on Pinterest. And what with all the new Springy things out on the High Street, I thought it a good time to share a few of my favourites….

Starting with some Spring florals…. I love this pretty top and can see Emma wearing it over a knee length pencil skirt perhaps…..

And how gorgeous is this skirt?! Emma would rock this with a pretty white blouse I think….

Emma loves Kate Spade. Fact. And this lovely blue dress would look amazing with her fiery hair….

And this dress is the perfect shape for her look, with a skinny belt perhaps (it should always be a skinny belt)….

And to go with it…. more Kate Spade and more stripes…. I am crazy about these, the colour is amazing!….

Stripes….Kate Spade…. a pattern emerges! Want!….

Emma is certainly one to rock a bead necklace, and also plenty of bow embellishments…. I could go nuts for this necklace from Miu Miu….

Gingham and floral together….works so beautifully I think. Emma could totally wear this combo….

The accessories are as important as the rest…. I would love to wear this colour, and perhaps this scalf wrapped around my hair (although it’s not quite Emma perfect ginger!)…

And for a really special occasion…. how beautifully Emma is this vintage dress?!?!…

Source: promdresses-blog.info via UnderAGlassSky on Pinterest

And you couldn’t hope to replicate Emma’s look without a statement brooch (and my board is full of them!)….

Well, I’d best stop there before I while away a few days pinning and posting Emma worthy finds!

Still, if you want more of the same do check out my I Want To Be Emma Pillsbury board, and for more Emma-style advice I adore What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear.

Wednesday Wants…… Spring Handbags

I love this time of year. Although it’s still rather chill, the sky is more often blue and the snow drops and blooming blossom trees promise that Spring is near. The shops too are filled with light and floaty things ready for the warmer weather….and of course the handbags have lightened up too.

And so here are my pick of rather aspirational spring handbag ‘wants’……

Alexander McQueen, Ivory Canvas Spike Tote

I absolutely love this ivory canvas tote by Alexander McQueen. It’s not just the classic tan leather detailing and strap, but the rather more edgy gold-tone brass spike detail, and the lovely triple buckle. At £895 from Liberty it’s not likely to join my collection any time soon, but one can still dream…..

A little more realistic, although still very aspirational at £450 is the stunningly vintage styled Eva from Lulu Guinness. Infused with 1940s glamour, I adore the sleek shape and the wonderfully cute heart-shaped clasp. Not to mention the gorgeous stripey lining…..

Lastly, I’m loving the large Vida Weave bag in natural and black leather from Reiss. I love the perforated leather and chunky tassel charm, and at £265 it’s not *too* pie in the sky.

Reiss, Vida Weave Slouch Shoulder Bag

Anyone found any cream handbag treasures to share?
