Wednesday Wants: Back to School with Not On The High Street

This week I got the very exciting news that I’ve been accepted to join Not On The High Street, and I’ll be opening up a little Under A Glass Sky shop there very soon! Naturally, I’ve been using this as an excuse to spend ages browsing this lovely site, snooping around and window shopping…..And what with it being that time of year (not to mention my stationery obsession) I’ve been very much led down the ‘Back To School’ path. And that’s despite not actually having been to school in some time now!

Still, a girl can still hanker after some fancy new stationery can’t she? Here’s my picks….

Personalised Pencil Case, by TILLYANNA, £8

Well this literally has my name all over it! And not only was this lovely pencil case clearly *made* for me, but it also stipulates it’s to carry my ‘creative kit’….which means I could fill it with all kinds of marvellous things!

Pack Of 12 Personalised Colouring Pencils, by ABLE LABELS, £6.50

And to fill that personalised pencil case? Why, a set of personalised pencils of course!

‘Stuff I’m Likely To Forget’ Notebook, by BREAD & JAM, £13.50

Another thing *clearly* made for me! I just have to keep list upon list, lest I forget where I’m coming from and what I’m doing. And there’s nowhere better to keep all those lists than a super cute note book like this one.

Personalised ‘From The Kitchen Of’ Stamp, by PRETTY RUBBER STAMPS, £12.50

I love stamping things. I used to have a self built toy post office as a child and would merrily stamp anything that sat still for long enough. This one would be great for home-baked gift giving….and you know, just anything that sits still long enough.

Rob Ryan For Alphabet Bags Initial Tote Bag, by ALPHABET BAGS, £16

Of course, one always needs a pretty new bag to carry one’s pretty new things in. I adore Rob Ryan and these initial book bags with his darling paper-cut initials on make me smile.

Bunny In The Field Paper Clip Holder, by KIKI’S GIFTS AND HOMEWARE, £15

And now for the pièce de réstistance…. I am just crazy about this little bunny rabbit! He cleverly gathers up all your paper clips, and he’s silly cute to boot. I want him on my desk this instant!

Are you allowing yourself any ‘Back to School’ time extravagances? What type of stationery really floats your boat?!

Do keep an eye out for my Not On The High Street shop….my vintage stamp jewellery should be live on there in a week or so!

Vintage stamp jewellery

I’ve been making little bits and pieces of jewellery from stamps for ages now, and have sold some at craft fairs and pop-up shops, but I’ve never really gotten around to listing them to sell online. I had a whole load of really lovely stamps that were just begging to be used though, so I recently made up a big batch to sell!

They are something of a labour of love these brooches and pendants….they take over a week to make, as I have to remove the stamps safely from any backing, paste them onto veneer, strengthen the veneer, trim and file down the edges, apply *seven* coats of varnish to them, and finally add the brooch pin or necklace. I do love making them though and turning something old into something new is great fun, especially because these stamps are the sort of thing that just won’t get enjoyed otherwise….and they are too pretty not to enjoy!

I have lots all ready to go, but for now here is a little selection of my favourites….I’ll let you know when they are all online and ready for sale! What do you think of them?

Blog Every Day in May: Who Inspires You?

“Who inspire you? Are they close to you? Somebody famous? Or even somebody infamous?”

I get inspiration from all over the place. I love my fashion books and vintage magazines for design inspiration, blogs and old cookery books for recipe ideas, films and fashion trends for event and party planning, and friends for more personal stuff. I’ve never really thought of *people* as being inspirational to me though, at least not celebrity type people….but when I think about it, there are certainly a lot of creative people who inspire me to be more creative myself….

I saw the Tomb of The Unknown Craftsman exhibition at the British Museum about 18 months ago, before which I didn’t know a great deal about Grayson Perry. Not only did I come out of the show feeling like I knew the guy, but also feeling massively inspired, excited to work and full of creativity. I think it shows true inspiration if you can be so creative that you make other people feel creative too….often I come out of amazing exhibitions like that feeling like I’ll never be any good and it’s pointless me even trying…but there’s something about Perry’s ingenuity, originality and confidence that just grabs you and tells you that you can do it too!

I’ve been a big fan of Tim Walker’s work for a long while, but seeing his exhibition Storyteller at Somerset House earlier this year was still an eye opener. I adore his playfulness, intelligence and silliness, and I suppose because so much of his work speaks to me, I find it terribly inspiring too.

As much as I owe to these awesome creatives though, I can’t forget the inspiration I gain every day from all the creative people around me. I have lots of seriously creative friends, acquaintances and online chums…. whether they be designers, photographers, crafters or writers…. and I count myself lucky to know them and to be part of their world….

These include (but are not limited to…I know I’ll forget some people!)… Vixie of Matin Lapin…. Nevada of Joy Nevada…. Michelle of My: Creative…. Ellen of B Millinery…. Elizabeth of Rosalilium…. Jackie of Oooh Mrs James…. Sharon of Sharon Cooper Photography…. and my very own Adam of Unfamiliar Ceiling….

Blog Every Day in May

I’ve been feeling for a while now that my blog has been a little lacking. I suppose I’m in a bit of a rut with it, as I’ve not really been giving it much of my time, so I’m just posting my regular weekly ‘standards’ and not much else. There’s loads I want to blog about, but I never quite pull my finger out to do it, so I’m very glad to have been given a little push….

I have long since loved the wonderful Rosalilium blog, hosted by the gorgeous Elizabeth. We have stacks in common and I really enjoy her writing. So, when Elizabeth announced she’d be hosting a blog-every-day-challenge for May, I thought that was just the perfect thing to get me back into the swing of things!

Blog Every Day in May  is just what you’d expect from the name….Elizabeth challenges fellow bloggers to post every day for the entire month of May, and has thoughtfully come up with a new topic for every one. It’s super easy to sign up on her blog and then you can just download the scheduled topics from her special Google calendar. I love the idea that the project will build a little community as we all encourage each other and get to know each other through our posts. My fiance Adam is also taking part on his blog, and I look forward to finding lots of new blogs to delve into too!

So, why not take on the challenge yourself?
