Tuesday Tutorial: Jewellery Picture Frames

photo (5)

I actually first made these to display my jewellery in at a pop-up shop I was exhibiting in, but once I’d brought them home I thought they’d just be perfect for keeping my own collection all tidy! I have a beautiful big jewellery box, and a big hat box that’s crammed with jewellery too, but despite all that my things invariably end up strewn across the fireplace in the bedroom!

photo (6)

I have my flavours of the month, then they get buried underneath the next favoured few, and before too long I’ve forgotten what I have! This way though I get to show off several pieces at once, keep them all de-tangled and then just swap them back into the jewellery box when I want a change!

photo (7)

These are super easy to make, and only took me moments. They’re cheap to put together too (I made them using bits and bobs I already had at home!) and don’t take any special skills!

What you will need:

  • Picture frames (broken, or with the glass and backing removed)
  • Pencil
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Small cup hooks
  • Drawing pins
  • String
  • Mini pegs
  • A bradawl tool, if you have one, or something sharp and pointy if not! (Please be careful!!)
  • White tack or picture nails

How to make:

1. Along the top edge of your tallest frame, measure the inside edge and mark out where you’d like each hook to go using the pencil

2. Using the bradawl, start off a hole at each mark

3. Screw your hooks into the holes, ensuring they all end up facing the same way

photo (4)

4. Along each side edge of another frame, measure out and mark with a pencil where you’d like a string to cross, leaving a good 5cm in between each

5. Push a drawing pin into each mark

6. Tie string across and between each set of drawing pins

7. Attach pegs to the strings

photo (2)

8. Now they’re ready to go on the wall, either suspended on nails or just attached with white tack (like mine!)

9. Hang long necklaces from the hooks, and rings, brooches etc. from the pegs

10. Stand back and admire your work!

The Hills Are Alive, With the Sound of Music!

After a little inspiration from the Austrian-themed hen do I went to last weekend, I’ve finally listed my new jam jar sculpture….. Inspired by the opening scene from The Sound of Music, this miniature scene features Maria atop a meadowy mountain, with her arms outstretched in song.

I love making these tiny pieces of art, and must get onto making a few more of the scenes I’ve been planning! If you have any ideas or requests, do let me know!

You can now buy this jam jar scene on my Etsy shop for just £35….. I hope you like it!

Wednesday Wants…. Alex Monroe

Tomorrow sees the launch of Alex Monroe‘s new collection, ‘Chase’, and being a bit put out that I can’t make it to the launch event (I’m working locally all day) I have been consoling myself by browsing his website of stunning treasures….

I’ve long since adored the wonderfully whimsical and enchanting jewellery made by the British designer, who grew up in Suffolk “surrounded by fields, rivers and the plants and creatures which inhabit them”…..it’s more than likely this idyllic inspiration that attracts me to the dainty, finely detailed pieces. I love that in his work you can buy ‘fine’ jewellery which is still fun and quirky, as well as so amazingly wearable.

And as if that’s not appeal enough, every piece that Monroe designs is hand made in his London studios, by his team of highly skilled craftspeople….just down the road from my old office as it happens! I’m just crazy about everything this man does, and I think this quote rather sums up his work and those who adore it as much as me…. ‘I like people who like my jewellery. They are not slaves to fashion; they tend to be more concerned about personality and craftsmanship. They care about quality and they like things that are quirky and individual.’ Well said!

But without further ado, here are my favourites, this week’s Wednesday Wants….

Tiny Bird Loop Necklace, from the Birdlife collection, £135.00

Pea Pod Necklace, from The Gardener collection, £120.00

Fine Ring with Tiny Heart, from the Dream of Me collection, £126.00

Hamper Locket, from the Daisy Bell collection, £180.00

Apple Locket With Baby Snake, from the Original Sin collection, £225.00

The Goring Shrimp, in collaboration with The Goring Hotel, £165.00

Rose Gold Plate Bumblebee Necklace, from the Classic collection, £165.00

If you’re off to the Chase launch, do have fun! I can’t wait to see the new collection!

New on my Etsy shop….. Mother’s Day Cards

It was cutting it a bit fine, but I’ve just finished my designs for my Mother’s Day cards, and they’re now available to buy on my Etsy shop!

I have drawn and painted in watercolour a cute tattoo-inspired ‘Mum’ design, as well as a sweet bird and banner ‘Marvelous Mother’ design. I’ll be painting one saying ‘Mom’ instead of ‘Mum’ ready for US Mother’s Day in May too.

Each card is printed in high resolution on high quality, thick 350gsm art card from FSC credited paper stock. There is a light satin coating on the outside, whilst the inside is left un-coated, making it easier for you to write your own message. Each card measures 4.13″ x 5.82″ / 105mm x 148mm (A6) and includes a good quality matte white envelope.

I’m also selling A4 sized prints which will make lovely gifts for your marvelous Mums too!

Wednesday Wants…. I Am A Bird

I came across these stunning treasures on Etsy a few weeks ago, but was very happily reminded of them today when they featured in a daily ‘Etsy Finds’ email!

I Am A Bird is an enchanting Etsy shop hosted by the wonderfully talented Madeleine Belanger, a 21 year old artist and jewellery designer from British Columbia, Canada. Madeleine also has a darling blog that you can find here, but it’s really her stunning jewellery that has my attention.

Taking inspiration from her surrounding Canadian landscape, colors and animals, Madeleine hand paints each completely unique piece featuring owls, deer, evergreen trees, squirrels, racoons and birds.

You can even order a bespoke piece by Madeliene, and I think a pet portrait necklace would be an incredible gift!

fox necklace in wood necklace- framed fox necklace- hand painted unique fox necklae

Fox in wood necklace, £30

How adoringly crafty is this little fox?! This beautiful pendant was made from unique wood retrieved from wine vats, which has been cut, sanded and drilled by Madeleine’s Dad! The pendant has been painted and sanded, then filled with a crystal clear resin.

honey harvest bear- fall fashion wooden bear necklace- wheat field dark wood- iamabird black friday cyber monday sale

Honey harvest bear, £30

I love this sweet little grizzly bear who stands in front of a wheat field. Another original painting, every order is completely unique!

summer owl - turquoise teal summer fashion owl- hand painted wooden necklace black friday cyber monday sale

Summer owl, £27

I adore the teal backdrop to this owl necklace! It just looks stunning against the blonde wood and golden owl.

Framed Fox Necklace- Hand painted wood fox necklace- reclaimed wooden fox necklace

Framed fox necklace, £40

The oval shaped pieces rather remind me of cameos, and I find this little fox utterly enchanting! The wood, which is recycled from old bed posts and the like, has been hand stained.

honey bee spring fashion necklace- hand painted bee necklace- honey comb wooden necklace

Honey bee necklace, £30

I’m loving bees at the moment, so this one was bound to appeal to me. For this particular style, a hole is drilled into the wood and the bee is forever suspended in his quaint little home, safely behind a super glossy resin.

valentines bird wood slice necklace- hand painted wood slice necklace

Love bird necklace, £17

And the super-cute winner is this Love Bird necklace! The little loops are secured into each piece of wood, and from those the pendants hangs on a silver chain….you can even choose the length and colour!

Should funds allow, I’d go crazy and buy all of these….and probably lots more on the shop besides! And with an exceptionally reasonable £3 shipping cost, it’s all the more tempting!

More Valentines Cards now in my Etsy shop!

I know I’ve already posted about Valentine’s cards, and that it is still a little way off, but I thought you may like to see the new Valentine’s cards I’m now selling on my Etsy Shop. My ‘Love Is….’ vintage Panini sticker cards have sold pretty well already, but I wanted to paint some romantic designs more in keeping with the cards I made for Christmas last year. The result is these rather kitch, lovey-dovey designs……

Flamingos In Love, Valentine's Card, print from original watercolour

Swans In Love, Valentine's Card, print from original watercolour

I have drawn and painted in watercolour these elegant swans and pretty flamingos, whose slender necks make the shape of a heart! I think they are wonderfully whimsical and rather cute!

I have made the designs into Valentine’s cards, but am also selling A4 size prints of the drawings, as well as the original paintings…. I think they’d make just as good a gift for someone’s home as a Valentine’s card…. and of course they work just as well for anniversaries and special occasions too!

Each card is printed in high resolution on high quality, thick 350gsm art card from FSC credited paper stock. There is a light satin coating on the outside, whilst the inside is left un-coated, making it easier for you to write your own message. Each card measures 4.13″ x 5.82″ / 105mm x 148mm and includes a good quality matte white envelope. They are available now in my Etsy Shop for $5.00 / £3.23 each.

Hope you like them!

Love is…..

Valentines Card 'Love Is....' Vintage Panini Sticker in various designs

Well, with Christmas over it’s time to think about Valentines already! I know that will fill lots of people with dread, and that the site of Easter eggs in the shops already feels like we’re wishing away the year, but what can you do?!

As such, I’ve been starting work on some Valentine’s Day gifts and cards to sell in my Etsy shop, and I’ve just listed the first of my card designs. I’ve loved the ‘Love Is…’ designs and drawings by Kim Grove for as long as I can remember…..I have a little figurine in my studio in fact, that used to sit in my childhood bedroom. So when I found this collection of PANINI collectable stickers devoted to the designs, I had to have them! And rather than them languish in one of my numerous treasure boxes at home, I thought I’d put them to good use by transforming them into super-cute greetings cards for Valentines!

Each original vintage sticker has been carefully attached to a high quality pale yellow A6 size card (148 x 105 mm / 5.8 x 4.1 in) using retro style brown paper photo corners. I have attached them in such a way that the sticker may be removed to reveal the reverse side, where you will find the title of the design (which appears in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian), as well as the design number and trademark.

The cards come complete with a matching envelope in the same primrose yellow. I have left the inside blank for your own message, and so they can be used for Valentines, Birthdays, Engagements, Weddings or just a Thank You card.

I have lots of different stickers from the collection, so you can choose which one best suits you and your Valentine! I personally love ‘Love is…..putting on the style for her’ (which is in the picture above), as well as ‘Love is…..dancing in the old-fashioned way,’ ‘Love is…..consoling her when her snowman melts’ and ‘Love is…..taking up cycling to get his weight down’!!!

I just think they’re adorable!

There is only ONE of each sticker so each card is completely unique! They are £3.20 ($5.00) each, and available to buy here now!

Wednesday Wants….. Christmas Tree Ornaments

I’m afraid I’m not one of those people who carefully styles their themed Christmas tree in matching colours and with perfectly chosen decorations. My tree always has been, and always will be, a mish-mash of home made bits and bobs of all shapes, sizes and colours. If I ever have a second tree for Christmas, I will no doubt dress it immaculately in coordinated adornments, but until then it’s home-made charm all the way! And so, with that in mind, I’ve been spying a few Christmas tree ornaments that would fit nicely with my no-theme theme……

I think these are just brilliant. Cute and funny, and sort of traditional in a quirky way, these sets of Victorian style chenille dog and cat ornaments are handmade and designed by Old World Primitives and sold on Etsy. Each little face is a Victorian era image, mounted onto little chenile bodies. They are just so wonderfully different and charming…..and they’d fit in with my other ornaments beautifully! The cats are £6.37 for a set of two (plus £4.43 shipping to the UK) and the dogs come as a set of three for £7.64 (plus the same shipping). I love them!

There’s something so wonderfully decadent about this beaded bauble by Creative Treasures on Folksy. Hand woven using tiny seed beads in a Russian Leaf design, it’s brilliantly Deco and rather reminds me of a 30s chandelier or head dress! Its utter glitzyness would definitely make it at home with my other decorations! It’s £8.50 with £2.70 shipping to the UK.

This last one is just so much fun! I love the idea of Father Christmas delivering presents on his own space rocket! The design rather reminds me of the little ornaments I made from model clay a few years ago….I made jolly, fat Father Christmases, snow men and reindeer….unfortunately they are all a little damaged now after moving house a few times so they need some TLC! In the mean time though, this personalised one by Chantal Davenport on Not on the High Street would fill the gap brilliantly! It’s £11.50 with UK shipping at £2.75.

How do you like to decorate your tree? Do you have lots of hand-made ornaments, or do you have a proper colour scheme and theme?!
