Ideas for the weekend….. and bargains beyond

I always have my eye firmly set on a bargain as you may already have realised….. when I round up all the things I want to do at the weekend to share with you here, I am always super keen that as many as possible are free (you get to do all the more that way, right?). But lately I’ve been getting even more savvy, and have found what I think are some great bargain adventures to share…..

Caledonian Park, until 20th May

Last night we went up to Caledonian park to see Babel. It’s a site specific, promenade performance, with a cast of 300….. all specially created for the park itself and its awesome clock tower. We had a great time, although we thought it would have benefitted from a much larger audience (it was rubbish weather in fairness)….. so why not go now that the rain has stopped and help make up a full house! There are also lots of offers for half price tickets…. we went for just £12.50!

Southbank Centre, until 30th September

I do love a Speigeltent. And that’s the very thing at the centre of the Southbank Centre’s new festival, Priceless London Wondergound. Saturday sees a fabulous cabaret inside the tent, with performances from Kitty Bang Bang, Paul Zenon and Roxy Velvet amongst others. There are lots of events as part of the festival though, lasting the whole summer…. top of my list are The Outer Limits, a cabaret show hosted by the tremendous Dusty Limits….. the ‘kitschiest show on the planet’, Alternative Eurovision …..  Up and Over It who wowed me with their original act at a gloriously intimate cabaret event last year….. and The Fitzrovia Radio Hour, a splendid bunch who write and perform 1940s inspired radio broadcasts on stage, with hilarious sound effects, spiffy costumes and limitless originality. Tickets range in price from around £15 to £20….. Time Out have had some ticket offers on though, so look out for a bargain!

Up and Over It

Kensington Dollshouse Festival

Kensington Town Hall, until 13th May

It’s well known that I’m crazy about all things miniature, and there are few things I wanted more as a child than a glorious dolls house. Still do in fact! Since 1985, the team behind the Kensington Dollshouse Festival have created the best destination for high quality miniatures in London, with customers travelling from as far as Japan and the USA! Taking place at the wonderful Kensignton Town Hall, the event is £6 to get in and will have everything you need for your dream dolls house or model, as well as a huge browsing potential, free cloakroom and excellent refreshments. £6 for limitless day dreaming is far less than buying a whole house right?!

Punch and Judy Professors and Puppeteers from all over the country will be coming to perform throughout the day, which is in fact Mr Punch’s 350th birthday!

Big British Shop

Selfridges, Oxford Street, free entry

The Diamond Jubilee is super close now, and how better to get into the spirit than a big British shopping stint. Visit The Big British Shop in the Selfridges London Concept Store to find ‘witty, edgy and world-class British products, designed and curated for Selfridges by some of the most iconic British brands.’ There’s a Jubilee-inspired Tiara shop and ‘Shop Like The Queen’ curated corner featuring an exhibition of historic coronation gloves by Dents.

LSO Open Air Classics

Visit Trafalgar Square tomorrow evening for this free concert, which sees acclaimed conductor Valery Gergiev lead the London Symphony Orchestra as well as 100 young musicians from LSO Discovery. Large screens will be set up on either side of the stage so that everyone has the chance to see the musicians perform close up…… The concerts aim to present classical music in an informal and relaxed setting, for a truly accessible experience.

Beyond Retro 10th Birthday Celebrations

Of all the vintage shops I’ve come across, this one has probably taken the most of my money. With four great locations, and an incredible stock of bargain vintage treasures, Beyond Retro has now been supplying London with retro apparel for ten years and is treating its loyal customers to celebrate! On the 15th May there’s an evening of live music at the Brick Lane store….. on the 17th the Dalston store is hosting a cabaret showcase…..over in Soho, there will be two talks with fashion historian Amber Butchart on the 18th….. and on the 19th the Dalston branch will be having fun with an afternoon of acoustic live music with Hoxton FM. Look out for the new anniversary totes designed by Beyond Retro’s arty staff (only £5) and log on to their site for news of online giveaways and £1000 worth of prizes!

I think that’s enough to fill my weekend…. hope it fills you with ideas too!

Ems x
